The poem describes a hidden other world which lies between the sidewalk and the street: a world which children know how to find, where things are somewhat different from our world. There is a place where the sidewalk ends. A popular poem for children, it was first published in 1974. The meaning of the poem is that we should all endeavor to make this same journeyfrom a life of sin to one of innocence, and from a life of complications to one of clarity. This collection is one of his two best, and if you're a fan of avant garde poetry then you will certainly love it. ![]() Of course, there have been other poets throughout history who have managed to write some incredible poems as well, but Shel is undoubtedly the most prolific author of modern poetry that I can think of. His way with words and his wit are simply in a category all their own when it comes to writing this type of material. Shel Silverstein is one of the best poets who has ever lived, bar none. ![]()
